How Does a Life Look Like Without God’s Word?

How would life be without God’s word? Scripture itself is full of descriptions of a life which treasure God’s words, and also a life which does not treasure God’s words. Below is a list of how my life would look like if I choose NOT to treasure God’s Word.

I would have…

  1. No spiritual light

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

  1. No eternal insight

“Yes, I have more insight than my teachers, for I am always thinking of your laws.” Psalm 119:99 (NLT)

“…give me understanding according to your word!” Psalm 119:169b (ESV)

  1. No faith

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.” Romans 10:17 (ESV)

  1. No salvation (rebirth)

“For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God.” 1 Peter 1:23 (NIV)

  1. No satisfying food

Jesus answered, “Scripture says, ‘A person cannot live on bread alone but on every word that God speaks.'”  Matthew 4:4 (GWT)

  1. No blessings

“Blessed is the one….whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night.” Psalm 1:1a, 2 (NIV)

  1. No good works

“All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16, 17 (NASB)

  1. No purity

“How can a young man keep his way pure? By living according to your word. I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.”  Psalm 119:9, 11 (WEB)

  1. No spiritual discernment

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”  Hebrews 4:12 (ESV)

  1. No honour

“Oh, that my actions would consistently reflect your decrees! Then I will not be ashamed  when I compare my life with your commands.”  Psalm 119:5, 6 (NLT)

  1. No truth

“Sanctify them in the truth: thy word is truth.”  John 17:17 (ASV)

  1. No lasting joy

“Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart.”                     Psalm 119:111(ESV)

  1. No true success

“Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.”       Joshua 1:8 (NLT)

  1. No hope

“I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my hope in your word.”  Psalm 119:147 (NIV)

  1. No peace

“Great peace have those who love your law, and nothing can make them stumble.”         Psalm 119:165 (NIV)

May this list stir a hunger within us to cherish and treasure God’s Word! This list is not exhaustive, but an attempt to show how meaningless our lives would be without God’s eternal Word.
